Chapter 12

Lou knew Maddy was right. She needed to tell Easton what she’d just heard Derrick say about Ronald’s murder. She considered her nieces, wondering if she should take them with her.

“You should go alone, Aunt Lou,” Maddy said, making the decision for her.

“We’ll be fine,” Mia added.

As if realizing that she would worry about leaving them there alone, Maddy added, “We’ll lock the door behind you and won’t let anyone in unless it’s you.”

Lou’s mouth pulled into a grateful smile at her nieces’ maturity. “Okay. Thank you. Be safe, you two.” She blew a kiss at them before running out the door, heading down the street to the police station.

Lou picked up her pace as they crossed Thread Lane and then Binding Street to get to the police station. Lou had only been inside a handful of times, but the place was bustling compared to any other visit. Excitement crackled in the air as palpable as someone getting their hands on a sheet of Bubble Wrap. She wasn’t sure what was going on, but something had obviously just happened.

“I need to see Detective West,” she said as she came to a stop in front of the ornery Officer Reynolds, who always seemed to work the desk when she came in.

“Course you do,” he said with a wink that made Lou shudder. But then his face lit up. “Actually, perfect timing. He was saying he needed you to verify something for him. Let me show you to the room he wants you in.”

Reynolds led Lou to a room that held bankers’ boxes piled in one corner and a large two-way mirror along the opposite wall. It was empty, as was the room on the other side of the glass. In that room, there was a table and two chairs.

“Just wait here. He’ll be right in.” Reynolds winked at Lou again.

She wrapped her arms around herself. The cool air, while at first a pleasant reprieve from the stuffy summer weather, now felt too cold as she stood alone in the room. Just as she was about to leave to find Easton, the door to the interrogation room on the other side of the mirror opened.

A young man walked in, followed by Easton. Lou gasped, and then immediately hoped the room she was in was soundproof. The person who sat down across from the detective wore a black hooded sweatshirt. He was probably in his twenties, with dark hair, pudgy cheeks, and a slight build. He was a little taller than Lou, but not much.

She didn’t even need to see his shoes to know this was the person she’d seen fleeing the site of Ron’s murder the other day. There wasn’t a doubt in her mind.

Easton cleared his throat.

The young man glanced up, hopeful. He repositioned his hands from where they’d been wringing in front of him and moved to rub them on his jeans, like he was getting rid of sweat.

“Please state your name,” Easton said.

“Aiden Foreman.”

“And are you related to David Foreman, who used to work at the Tinsdale steel mill?” Easton asked.
